A 53-year-old woman was killed on Tuesday on the way back from an Eid staycation, when the car she was travelling in flipped. The Indian expat, Sajinabanu, was traveling from Al Ain to Ajman with her family when the accident occurred.
A mother of two grown sons, Sajinabanu and her husband Nazeer have been residents of Ajman for over 30 years, according to their family. Their elder son is a doctor in India and their younger son was in the car when the accident took place.
The group, which included seven members from the same family, had arrived at a farmhouse in Al Ain on Monday for a one-day staycation. After a relaxing day at the farm, the group left for their homes in Ajman but tragedy struck almost immediately.
A family member said that “it was a ritual” for them to go for staycations or camping trips whenever there was a long holiday.
Slow speed
According to a niece of Sajinabanu’s husband, the families were in two cars and were driving on an unpaved road when the tragic incident happened. “They were driving on a very slow pace along the unpaved road when they hit a bump,” she said, requesting anonymity. “The steering wheel got stuck and the car suddenly flipped.”
She added that Sajinabanu was thrown out of the car and died instantly. “She slammed her head on the ground and suffered fatal injuries,” she said. “She died on the spot. No one else in the car suffered even a scratch. It was truly such an unfortunate accident.”
Sajinabanu was rushed to a hospital in Al Ain where she was pronounced dead. A local social worker helped the family with the paperwork so that the body could be flown to India.
‘One of the kindest’
The niece remembered her as the “one of the kindest” people they knew and as someone who always
She described her uncle’s condition as heartbreaking. “My uncle and his son are still in shock after the incident,” she said. “They are both struggling to come to terms with it. My aunt was one of the kindest and sweetest people I ever knew. She would always call all of us and check on us about our wellbeing. She loved and cared about everyone around her so much. I still cannot believe that she is gone.”
She said she spent all of Tuesday afternoon at the hospital and was on the way to the airport when she spoke to Khaleej Times late on Wednesday evening. “As soon as we heard the news, we rushed to Al Ain,” she said. “We were there all of Tuesday until very late in the night. The social worker there was very helpful and assisted us in getting the paperwork done. Tonight, her body will be flown home for burial in our hometown in Kozhikode.”
