How This Irish Expat Is Changing Lives Through Inclusive Sports

If you have ever encountered the brilliant energy of Heroes of Hope in a local sporting event, you have witnessed Hollie Murphy’s work. The Irish expatriate is the founder of one of the most shocking sports academies of the EAU for people of determination, a non -profit organization that now supports almost 300 athletes in 24 sports.

Lovin Dubai met Hollie to talk about the power of the community, build something from scratch and the relentless search for inclusion through sport.

It all starts with a moment of madness

Originally Physical Education professor, Hollie moved to Dubai and quickly saw a gap in inclusive sports programs. “There were so many children who wanted to play, but there were simply not longing for them. I wanted to change that,” he said.

What is a small duration of the Covid era has now become a sports movement, backed by hundreds of families, volunteers and coaches who believe in the mission.

From a sport to 24 (and counting!)

Today, Heroes of Hope executes 24 sports throughout the week, from swimming and athletics, basketball and Jiu-Jitsu-in collaboration with community academies. “We not only teach the sport; we organize events, create competitions and give athletes athletes a platform to shine,” he shared.

With growing waiting lists and hundreds of athletes involved, the demand for a central center is also growing. “We are still looking for a permanent place. That is the dream: to unite everyone under the same roof.”

What keeps it going? The athletes …

“I wake up every day thinking about what we can do the most,” he said. “These athletes are capable of so much. We are only giving them space and support to try it.”

Heroes of Hope runs purely in good will, without wages, only heart. “Every coach, each staff member, every help hand, all are volunteers. It is a movement driven by the purpose.”
