Roger Federer was panic. He knew how high were bets when he played the court in the O2 Arena de Prague in September 2017 for a Sunday afternoon match against Nick Kyrgios.
Federer was not only a founder of the competition of the Laver Cup team that made his debut a lot of Ballyhoo that year, but he and Tony Godsick, his pulmonary time manager, had worked to design rules that would probably result in a world in the world of the world. Federer got what he wanted, but now he had to deliver.
“I knew that if I lost against Kyrgios and that it was at the starting point, it would be reduced to a Super Tiebreker in doubles for everything [Nadal] And I against Kyrgios and [Jack] Sock, “Federer said on the phone last week.” It would have been crazy. I was so happy that when beating Kyrgios I didn’t have to go through that. “
Federer spoke last week while preparing to go to Berlin and this year’s Laver Cup. Early in the day he plays tennis for half an hour, a day of luxury thesis, but still described as “very fun.” While remembered his favorite memories of the Laver Cup, his voice increased with enthusiasm.
“That first year was definitely a climax,” said Federer, who won 20 important singles, including eight in Wimbledon and five in the US Open. “And, of course, go out to play double with Rafa, there was such a high expectation that it had never happened before. That was magical.”
It was a transcendental time after Federer and Nadal finished their loss of doubles against Socck and Frances Tiafoe in London in 2022, Federer’s last game before retirement. As was greeted by the crowd and his playmates. Federer and Nadal sat on the Bank of the court, grabbing their hands and sobbing.
“That was very emotional,” Nadal said, answering the questions of his house in Mallorca, Spain, just before the start of the open this August. “It was unforgettable. Roger had a very important person in my professional life, without a doubt, my best rival and, at the same time, a good salsa league on the tour. We created, I believe, a beautiful relationship. Legends of all time in our sport, the feelings were so intense.”
There are other moments of the Laver Cup that stomach the stomach when the European team won the first four years and the world of the team the last two. Alexander Zverev has assured the title of Team Europe three times.
“It is obviously special when it is the decisive game and you have the whole team behind you,” Zverev said in an interview last month. “If you win, you earn, and if you lose, you lose, but it is so when everyone supports you.”
Now that Federer is no longer competition and is in the business, he is very aware of the importance of the spectators experience in the Laver Cup.
“After having been now in Wimbledon as a fan and in the US Open as a fan, I want the experience for Laver Cup fans to be excellent,” he said. “I think the level of play is very high. I just want to see a great camaraderie, incredible images and images that come out of it.”
Two years retired from the competition, Federer no longer thinks of Himelf as a tennis player. But as a tennis fan?
“Honestly, I think I’ve always pushed a game fan,” he said. “I love to see tennis, I still follow the results daily. I try to see what my schedule allows me. I am happy that I also started the curite quickly, I did not stay at home too much and went to the Beeseers’ Beeseers tournament.
“For me it is important to go to the road, go to tennis tournaments, feel comfortable as a fan in a stage, not only at home on the couch.”
