The president of the United States states that Hollywood is experiencing a ‘very fast death’ despite the ring at $ 30 billion in revenues in 2024.
The president of the United States, Donald Trump, has announced plans to impose a 100 percent tariff on foreign films, claiming that Hollywood is experiencing a “very fast death” due to competition abroad.
In a publication on social networks on Sunday, Trump said he had ordered the United States Department of Commerce and the United States commercial representative to immediately begin the process of imposing the rate of “each and every one of the” films produced in “foreign lands.”
“Other countries offer all kinds of incentives to attract our United States filmmakers and studies. Hollywood, and many other areas within the United States, are devastated,” Trump Sid social platform.
“This is a concerted effort of other nations and, therefore, a national security threat. It is, in addition to everything else, messages and propaganda!”
Asked by journalists about the rate later on Sunday, Trump said that the United States was making “very few films now.”
“Other nations, many of them, have stolen our film industry,” he said. “If they are not willing to make a film inside the United States, we should have a tariff about the films that enter.”
Trump did not elaborate how such tariff works in practical terms, even if it would apply to the Hollywood characteristics that imply shooting and production in multiple countries.
Trump’s announcement follows his appointment in January of actors Sylvester Stallone, Mel Gibson and Jon Voight as “special ambassadors” in charge of bringing business that Hollywood has lost to other countries.
At that time, Trump said the actors would be “my eyes and ears” while dedicated to instituting a “Hollywood Golden Age.”
Hollywood has faced difficult commercial conditions in recent years in the midst of the consequences of COVID-19 pandemic and the strike of actors and writers of 2023.
Hollywood studies raised around $ 30 billion worldwide last year, approximately 7 percent since 2023, according to Gower Street Analytics.
Although last year’s performance was an improvement in income in 2020, 2021 and 2022, it was still approximately 20 below the pre-pandemic average, according to Gower Street Analytics.
